What is a Relationship Map?

A relationship map (also called a character map or connection chart) is a visual diagram that shows how people, characters, or entities are connected. Unlike simple family trees, RelationMap.io supports any type of relationship — romance, rivalry, alliance, hierarchy, friendship — with auto-colored edges that make complex networks instantly readable.

Whether you're mapping anime characters, historical figures, TV show families, or business org charts, a relationship map transforms tangled connections into clear, interactive visualizations. With our AI assistant, you can paste a paragraph from a novel and have the entire character network generated in seconds — or chat with AI to refine your map step by step.

How to Create a Relationship Map

3

Share & Export

Export as PNG or PDF, share a live link, or fork community maps. Free maps are CC BY-NC — open for everyone to learn from and remix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RelationMap.io free?

Yes! Unlimited local editing is completely free, forever. Your maps are saved in your browser — no server costs, no limits. Create a free account and get unlimited cloud projects too. Want AI features and private maps? Pro plans start at just $9.90/month.

Do I need to sign up?

No. You can open the editor and start building immediately — zero sign-up, zero forms, zero friction. An account is only needed if you want cloud saving, sharing, or collaboration.

What can I visualize?

Anything with relationships. Anime characters, TV show families, historical figures, business org charts, equity structures, political networks, novel characters, game lore — if things are connected, RelationMap.io can map them. Browse our Featured Maps for inspiration.

How is this different from a family tree tool?

Family tree tools only support parent-child relationships. RelationMap.io supports any relationship type — romance, rivalry, alliance, hierarchy, friendship, mentorship, enmity — with auto-colored edges that make complex networks instantly readable.

How do I save my work?

Your maps auto-save to your browser's local storage as you edit. For cloud backup, sign in and press Ctrl/⌘+S to save to your account. Cloud projects sync across devices and can be shared with others.

Can I share my map?

Yes! Free users get public share links — anyone with the link can view and interact with your map. Pro users can create private maps with password protection and custom branding. Check our pricing page for details.

What license are free maps under?

All free maps are published under CC BY-NC (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial). That means anyone can view, fork, and remix your map for non-commercial purposes — building a shared, open library of relationship maps. Need commercial use? Upgrade to Pro to choose your own license.

Can I export my map?

Yes. Export as PNG for images, PDF for documents, or JSON for data backup (Pro). You can also share a live interactive link that others can zoom, pan, and explore.

Can I import data?

Yes! Via JSON import, or use the AI Assistant (Pro) — paste a story or character description and AI builds the relationship map for you. You can also export from one project and import into another.

Can I embed a map on my website?

Coming soon — an embeddable widget for blogs, wikis, and websites. You'll be able to drop a relationship map into any page with a simple embed code.

Is my data private?

Local-only maps never leave your browser. Cloud projects are private by default — only you can access them unless you explicitly share. We do not sell or analyze your data. See our privacy policy for details.

Do I need to install anything?

No. RelationMap.io is 100% browser-based. Works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. No downloads, no plugins, no app store. Just open and create.

How does the AI Assistant work?

The AI Assistant (Pro feature) lets you create and edit maps using natural language. Paste a story excerpt and AI extracts characters and relationships automatically. Or type instructions like "add a rivalry between X and Y" to edit your map conversationally. Each message costs 3 credits out of 1,000/month.

Can I fork or remix community maps?

Yes! Browse public maps in the Featured Maps section, find one you like, and fork it to create your own version. It's the fastest way to get started.
